Bikeability
Bikeability is Cycling Proficiency for the 21st Century. It provides appeal and incentive for children and parents alike to undertake quality cycle training to ride safely and well on today's roads. Cycle training is the vital life-skill required before 'more children cycling, more safely, more often' can become a reality, and all the associated benefits of a new generation of young people cycling can be realised - including better health and fitness for cyclists and less congestion for us all.
There are three Bikeability levels and children will be encouraged and inspired to achieve all three levels, recognising that there is always more to learn and to enjoy on a bike. Bikeability will give children a life skill that once learnt, they will never forget. Level 1 is where the child learns to control their bike. By completing Level 1, they will have the skills to ride where there are no cars and that they are ready to start road training. Level 2 is where the child learns with real traffic, but sticking to quiet roads. By completing Level 2 they will have the skills to make a trip safely on quiet roads and cycle lanes, perhaps to school. Level 3 is where the child can move up to busy roads and advanced road features. It's like driving or motorbike lessons and once they have done it they should be able to bike most places safely, certainly after some practice. Normally the child will do this once they have started secondary school.
