Criminal Records Bureau Checks

S2S Ltd has recently been awarded Umbrella Body status to undertake CRB Disclosure checks on behalf of others.

Our Service
Our service involves recording applications and tracking their progress. S2S provides the necessary supporting documentation to enable the employer/applicant to complete Disclosure forms. Should there be a query, we liaise directly with the applicant; monitor the return of query information, ensuring all details are complete prior to sending to the CRB. Completed applications are forwarded to the CRB within 24 hours of receipt from the organisation/employer.
The copy of the Disclosure received by S2S will be forwarded to the organisation by first class post.

Types of checks
Standard
Standard CRB checks are for people entering certain professions, such as members of the legal and accountancy professions. Standard checks contain the following:

  • Convictions, Cautions, reprimands and warnings held in England and Wales on the Police National Computer, the most relevant convictions in Scotland and Northern Ireland may also be included;
  • Standard checks no longer include a check of the old or new barred lists from 12 October 2009, therefore if you are working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults, you may now be obliged to undertake  an Enhanced CRB check

Enhanced Disclosure
Enhanced checks are for posts involving work in a regulated activity for a regulated activity provider with children or vulnerable adults. In general, the type of work will involve regularly caring for, supervising, training or being in sole charge of such people. Examples include; Teacher, Scout or Guide leaders. Enhanced checks are also issued in certain statutory purposes such as gaming and lottery licences.
Enhanced checks contain the same information as Standard checks but with the addition of a check of the new barred lists if requested and any locally held police information considered relevant to the job role, by the Chief Police Officer
The CRB recognises that the Standard and Enhanced Disclosure information can be extremely sensitive and personal; therefore it has published a Code of Practice and employers’ guidance for recipients of Disclosures to ensure they are handled fairly and used properly Please visit www.crb.homeoffice.gov.uk for more information.
A copy of the Standard or Enhanced Disclosure will be sent out to the applicant as well as the Registered Body.

ISA Checks
Introduced in October 2009, the ISA is a Non-Departmental Public Body set up by the Home Office to provide a new vetting and barring service for those working with children and vulnerable adults.
It makes decisions over who should be barred from working with vulnerable people.
From July 2010 new employees, those moving jobs and volunteers who want to work with children and vulnerable adults can register with the ISA
From November 2010, all new employees and volunteers must be ISA registered before they begin in their role, at a cost of a one- off application fee of £64.00 (free for volunteers). In most cases this lasts for life.

It will be a criminal offence to employ or allow a new member of staff to volunteer or work with children or vulnerable adults if that person is not ISA registered.
CRB Disclosures must be carried out as before, the ISA registration does not replace the existing Disclosures.
For more information on the VBS, ISA-registration please visit www.isa-gov.org.uk   or call 0300 123 1111

Who can apply for a CRB check
If you are going to work as a paid employee or as a volunteer and your work will bring you into contact with children or vulnerable adults, you may be asked to apply for a CRB check. This check cannot be obtained by members of the public directly but are only available to organisations and only for those professions, offices, employment, work and occupations listed in the Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
For this reason your application will be processed either by your employer, if it is registered with the CRB, or a third party organisation, called an Umbrella Body, which is registered with the CRB
